Hair Advice Requested

I few weeks ago I came across a wonderful blog site on caring for AA hair. There is a lot of very good information on this blog, however, I'm not finding much on caring for infant AA hair. What I do know is that I have some blog friends out here who have been there, done that so I'm asking you to please share.

Favorite shampoo?
Favorite conditioner?
Favorite products in general?
Hair care advice?

Thanks.

Hi Debbie - I have experience with African-American hair from my foster children days. I loved the JUST ME products from Walmart, believe it or not. They smell great, they condition and they wash out easily. I used water everytime I wanted to style the babies hair, and conditioner every day. Maybe you are wanting something special, but honestly, this product worked just fine for us for babies. Just my opinion!! Excited to see pics when you get Naomi home!!

Haven't used it yet- but lots of people recommended the Olive Oil line of products at Target to us. They are kind of mid-priced and are all organic. They make the shampoos as well as the daily conditioning.

My daughter in law is african american, she and her family both told us to use the Just Me products too...I used a couple others before. Some depends on hair texture but it works great so far

I just go to the store to the AA section and stand there until somebody shows up with a baby, show her our babies hair and then i get my advise. just did it again today, lol......so far i have de-tangler, AA hair shampoo, some cream for her hair, special combs and hair bands, and today a lady advised me to put vaseline in her hair in the a.m. when i comb it.......things are working pretty good that way..

just take your baby to that aisle - great way to get sweet conversations as well ;-)

I have no advice, which is probably a good thing as Etta appears to be bald. Are you a member of the Yahoo group focusing on hair care?

If you go to happy girl hair and post a question, she'll do a special posting on the subject.
For Sam, the key is NO SHAMPOO. We only co-wash (conditioner wash) because otherwise his scalp & hair get too dry.
So ... I co-wash his hair about every 10-14 days in the bath. If it's drier, then I do warm oil over the conditioner. I detangle and then let it sit for 5-10 minutes (the time of his bath) and then rinse out. The nice thing is that if you don't get all of it, it's okay, because we use a leave in conditioner as well.
I use WEN, which is what I use on my hair, so no special products.
Every day I detangle in the morning, because it gets really snarly. This is a new thing...it didn't used to snarl. I put him in the high-chair and I have an oil conditioner (pump) bottle that is about 1/5 conditioner 4/5 water. I shake it up and put 2 pumps in my hands and then distribute. I use a wide-tooth comb and it only takes about 2-3 minutes. He hates it but its over soon. Once it's detangled, I just finger arrange his curls and that's it.
Nothing else.
I suppose he'll need a trim sometime, but not yet.

While in ET, I asked our driver to stop at a beauty supply store. He took us to, I kid you not, SALLY's Beauty Supply. Anyway, I went in WITH Sabah and the ladies there were MORE than happy to help me figure what was best for her hair. They picked out a GREAT comb that I haven't been able to find anywhere. I once lost this comb for over a week and, wow, the difference it makes.

They also told me I should just use PINK (You can get it just about anywhere...I get it at target, walmart or walgreens). After I came home, I tried SEVERAL other products and found that pink actually does work best for her hair. I use it in the morning and us Olive Oil Cream in the evening.

The ladies at Sally's also showed me a bottle of regular baby shampoo...and one year later I"m still using it. I only wash her hair once a week, but wet it everytime I give her a bath (which is almost every night, but we are starting to go every other night).

In the morning, I spray the hair down with water, put in the pink oil, and comb through with the brush. 95% of the time I leave her hair down. I do this for two reasons...1) I'm LAZY and 2) I SUCK at hair.

I highly suggest you take Naomi to Sally's (or another supply store). THey will be thrilled to help you out.
